Company Company profile
Forterra is a leading UK manufacturer of clay and concrete building products. Across our 17 manufacturing sites our 1,800 employees create the bricks, blocks, precast concrete, paving, and many other vital products that keep Britain building.
Our portfolio contains some of the most recognised and respected names in the construction industry. Some of them, such as London Brick and Butterley, date back to the 19th century while others, such as Ecostock, Formpave and Jetfloor, are far more recent; but whether historic or modern, traditional, or cutting edge, they all have the needs of 21st century construction at core.
Founded in the 1960s as part of Hanson’s building products division, we have forged a significant UK presence through the acquisition of several leading building product companies. In 2015, the company was rebranded Forterra and listed as an independent company on the London Stock Exchange a year later.
Committed to sustainability
Our business has a significant footprint, whether this is measured through the number of people we employ, the volume of raw materials we consume, the emissions from our sites, or simply the lives we touch through the properties built from our products. We are working hard to ensure our impact is always as positive as possible and, to this end, we use three sustainability pillars – people, planet, and product – to guide our decision making.
We were the first UK brick manufacturer to sign up to the Race to Zero global campaign and, building on our achievements of the last 10 years, we have recently announced new sustainability targets designed to help the UK reach Net Zero Carbon by 2050.
A major step towards this is our £95 million investment to transform our Desford plant into Europe’s largest and most efficient brick factory – the first bricks are expected to roll off the new production line in 2022.
Our purpose is to Keep Britain Building efficiently, sustainably, and economically.
Committed to our people
We give our employees the very best opportunities and support to grow and build the knowledge and skills that will enable them to develop rewarding careers, where they are able to influence and contribute positively to the future direction and success of our business.
We are an accredited Living Wage employer and a member of The 5% Club, a movement of employers working to create a shared prosperity across the UK by campaigning for greater skills training through ‘earn and learn’ job opportunities.
Our graduate schemes have been designed to develop highly successful managers and leaders, fast-tracking them along their chosen career path. We expect big things from our graduates, but, in return, they receive outstanding, hands-on opportunities to get involved in organising and leading projects that address real business challenges.
