In March 2000, at the height of the dotcom boom, two entrepreneurs by the name of Simon Crookall and Michael Pennington had an idea to set up a classified ads website for Aussies, Kiwis and South Africans arriving in the city. That was when the Gumtree community was born, as thousands flocked to the site to find somewhere to live, a bit of furniture, and a job to pay for it all.

Some 19 years later, Gumtree.com is part of the eBay Classified Group and is the UK’s number one classifieds site, spanning the entire length and breadth of this fine nation. With nearly a million new ads on the site each week, and a whopping 16.4 million visitors every month, we pride ourselves on being the go-to place for everything from iPhones to cars, jobs to flats, and even lodgers dressed as walruses!

We’ve also come a long way from being just a desktop site with over 9.5 million people having downloaded our app to their mobiles and tablets in search of success!

On top of this, getting in touch with us has never been easier. We’re busy on social media, with over 520,000 fans on Facebook and a busy Twitter account available during the working week. Our Customer support team are also available on live chat between the hours of 9am and 9pm every day of the year.

We continue to grow and improve, but we’re still sticking to our original aim of creating successful connections between people just like you and me!

How would you describe the work/life balance at Gumtree?
Gumtree offers a great work life balance by providing flexibility to manage my personal life and work load. The office has a positive and fun atmosphere and the team is very supportive. There are business and social events throughout the year including Christmas, Summer and Halloween parties!

Training & profiles

The Gumtree Sales Academy is designed to give you the best start possible to your sales career! This means developing the necessary skills, knowledge and behaviours to enable you to be a great ambassador of the Gumtree brand to new customers. This is vitally important as you will be the first encounter that many of our customers will have of Gumtree.

During your first 3 months your sales learning and development journey will comprise a series of group, one-to-one and e-learning sessions supported and led by your team leader, sales managers throughout the business and external coaches.

Once you have completed the sales academy you will understand how to deliver persuasive and successful sales call and sales work in order to reach your targets as well as achieve individual, team and department success.

Your learning doesn’t stop there though as you will have regular appraisals and one-to-one time with your team leader throughout the start of your career to give you to tools to be as successful as possible.
