Shell 2024 graduate opportunities

Company Company Profile

Shell is a global group of energy and petrochemicals companies with far-reaching business interests - from oil exploration to power generation to consumer services. With 93,000 employees in more than +90 countries, we play a key role in helping to meet the world’s growing demand for energy in economically, environmentally and socially responsible ways, for example supplying more biofuels for road transport and providing more natural gas for electricity generation.

We consider our global graduate programmes to be the training schemes for our next generation of senior leaders so in the UK we recruit only around 150 of the highest potential, carefully selected graduates and postgraduates each year.

Meeting the world’s energy challenges isn’t going to be easy so of course we need people who excel both intellectually and personally, but in return we offer high financial and personal rewards, such as a starting salary of at least £32,500.

My current assignment is in the Chemicals business, working as a financial analyst for Base Chemicals. The diversity of the projects I've been involved in has ensured this role has been challenging right from the beginning. I'm currently considering an assignment within the consultancy arm of Shell. I believe that within Shell opportunities are there for the taking.

Training & Profiles

As one of our successful applicants you’ll be placed into one of a diverse range of programmes across our business depending on your aspirations and the needs of the business. Typically opportunities arise in fields such as IT, Finance, HR, Trading, Sales & Marketing, Supply & Distribution and, of course, Engineering.

Each graduate programme provides 3-5 years of on-the-job development in real roles within the business. In your chosen field you’ll have the chance to complete three placements giving you a diverse range experience designed to ensure you have the skills and experience needed to move swiftly into a senior management position. From day one you may be managing high impact projects, people and/or considerable budgets.

As a Graduate starter you’ll get a mentor and a ‘buddy’ to support you and the training and development to enable you to maximize your potential. Professional qualifications such as CIMA, ACCA, CIPD and CIM are supported and we have very active staff networks, including Energie – a UK network for recent graduates, which give you access to colleagues from across the business at all levels.

FAQs

How we assess applicants:

The applicants who are progressed will first undertake an interview – usually over the phone. Success at this stage then leads to the final assessment which usually takes the form of a Shell Recruitment Day. This intensive event typically involves up to six candidates in both individual and group exercises designed to simulate the sorts of experiences you might get ‘on the job’ at Shell.

At every stage the focus is on identifying candidates’:

Capacity – the intellectual ability to analyse and apply unfamiliar information to complex situations.

Achievement – the ability to identify and manage resources in order to deliver results.

Relationship-building – the ability to work within, and lead, diverse teams

For those roles where it is relevant, such as the Engineering programmes, technical expertise is also assessed. We endeavour to ensure the process is as supportive as possible so that all our candidates perform to their best ability.

A career with Shell is more than just a day job. It’s an opportunity to join a network of connected professionals working together to resolve real world problems.
