a client facing role, which also allowed me to use my Maths background.

Description:

I joined the graduate scheme this September after applying for the role in my final year at university. I applied for the job because it was a client facing role, which also allowed me to use my Maths background. When I researched the position, I also found it was varied and gives the opportunity to gain a professional qualification. I then chose the organisation because of the friendly people I met at my interviews and also the focus on having a good work/life balance.

A typical day would start with checking my emails for any new work or information that has come through overnight. Then I’d get started on the tasks I’ve got for the day like emailing managers, putting together an investment review or billing a client. Normally there will be a couple of meetings each day and at the moment there’s lots of training in all aspects of the role. For some of these sessions we travel to London but most of the time they are in Leeds.

I’ve chosen to study for the Actuarial Qualifications, so I start my exams in April 2017. Willis Towers Watson have guided me through the steps of the process and provided me with all the study materials.

I’m really enjoying the job so far, every day is different and everyone at the office is very welcoming. It’s been great getting to know everyone, we’ve even got an office holiday to Barcelona coming up in a couple of months!

the work I do involves working together with clients, understanding their needs and recommending a solution for them.

Description:

Whilst doing my degree in Actuarial Science, Willis Towers Watson was well known among students for being one of the best employers for actuaries. I applied for an Investment Consulting internship as I was interested in how large institutional investors make their investment decisions. I enjoyed the internship and decided to start my career with the Willis Towers Watson graduate scheme the following year. The training I have received when I was a graduate was well structured and helpful for understanding more about my role, as well as other functions within the business.

Currently I sit within the Structured Products team, which is a team that is specialised in helping institutional investors such as UK pension schemes hedge the risks that they face. I find it interesting as the role is technically challenging and requires knowledge about market instruments such as swaps and gilts and also a good understanding about our client’s liabilities. On a day to day basis the work I do involves working together with clients, understanding their needs and recommending a solution for them.

I find that the people I’ve worked with are all very helpful and friendly, particularly when I had many questions at the start, which I really appreciate. The seniors around the office usually sit together with the team so we also get to listen to many interesting conversations about work. I personally like working with spreadsheets and models, I like that the role offers that, but also provides on the job training of communicating with people from different teams, as well as clients and investment managers. When I first joined I found it difficult to juggle multiple deadlines during busy periods, but it has certainly taught me how to manage my time and workload better.
