When I joined NEXT through the Early Careers programme, I never imagined how much I’d grow in such a short time. From working with global brands to managing my own portfolio, my journey has been full of exciting challenges, hands-on learning, and constant development.
If you're a student or recent graduate looking for a role that blends creativity with analytics, and gives you real responsibility early on, here’s what my experience at NEXT has taught me.
How It Started: My Journey Into Merchandising
I first discovered NEXT’s Early Careers programme while studying Business and Management at the University of Lincoln. The opportunity to combine both fashion and business instantly caught my attention.
What Does a Merchandiser Actually Do?
In a nutshell: A Merchandiser at NEXT ensures that the right products are in the right place at the right time. It’s a mix of strategy, creativity, and data analysis, all focused on driving sales and meeting customer demand.
In the NEXT Brands department, I work closely with Buyers to plan ranges, analyse sales, and make data-driven decisions. No two days are ever the same!
From Trainee to Assistant: How My Role Evolved
- Day One: Learning the basics. Analysing sales reports, assisting with stock management, and supporting inventory planning.
- Six Months In: Visiting global brands, selecting ranges, and working directly with my team on key projects.
- Now: Managing my own portfolio of brands, trading ranges, attending buy appointments, and contributing to trade meetings with senior teams.
"Two and a half years down the line, I’m now leading on my own brands, making key decisions, and shaping product selections. My favourite part? Seeing upcoming ranges come to life at buy appointments!"
The Skills That Help You Succeed in Merchandising
- Open-mindedness – The industry moves fast, so you need to embrace change and always be willing to learn.
- Collaboration – I work with Buyers, suppliers, and other teams every day. Teamwork is everything!
- Commercial Awareness – Knowing what customers want and why products sell is key to making the right decisions.
- Attention to Detail – Whether analysing sales figures or forecasting trends, accuracy is essential.
Balancing Creativity & Analytics: The Best of Both Worlds
One of the things I love most about Merchandising is the balance between analytical thinking and creative decision-making.
"When I build a range with my buying counterpart, I don’t just look at past sales data, I also consider trends, commerciality, and profitability. It’s all about using insights to make strategic, creative choices."
This blend of skills is what makes the role so exciting—you’re constantly learning and evolving.
The Biggest Lesson I’ve Learned? Confidence & Decision-Making Matter
NEXT has taught me how to own my decisions and think commercially. As a Merchandiser, every choice you make has an impact, so you need to balance different perspectives and trust your instincts.
"I used to be hesitant about making big decisions, but now I see them as opportunities to learn. The Early Careers programme gave me the confidence to step up, take ownership, and contribute in a meaningful way."
